The
mining operation covers from Amamapare on the coast, 120 Kilometres
inland to an altitude of over 4,200 metres. It is one of the few
places in the world where glaciers still exist on the mountain
peaks. The Fylde equipment provides complete coverage of all open
face and underground tunnel mining stretching a distance of over
54 Kilometres.
Radio coverage for tunnels is provided by fibre
optic cell enhancers supplied by AFL. The main trunked repeater
equipment and antenna combining remains on the surface but the
antenna is replaced by a fibre optic transmitter/receiver. Thus
the entire radio spectrum needed by the radio network is converted
into light.
The
hub of the trunked radio network is located close to the support
operations and the airfield in an area called LIP. One of the
trunk radio sites is also located here. It is at this point that
the radio sites served by fibre and microwave, many hundreds
of PABX circuits and the inter-continental satellite links come
together. The satellite link connects the island with North America.
One important feature allows Fylde personnel access
to the Irian-Jaya network from the U.K through an I.P gateway at
Freeport H.Q in New-Orleans. Through this gateway, Fylde are able
to interrogate and configure any hub or any channel on any site
in real time. The large dish carries the satellite traffic to Freeport
HQ in North America.
